Bella, a 10-year-old dog, has experienced her fair share of adversity. She had previously been kept by a dog breeder, who eventually gave her up once her fertility began to decline after forcing her to have several litters.
After that, Bella spent four years living with several canine rescue organizations, including Girls of Dog Rescue. They introduced Bella to her father, Matthew David.
He was able to see through Bella’s difficult past to her true self.
Bella has endured numerous traumas. She has been bred and has numerous scars. She was undoubtedly heavily bred, David told The Dodo. But she is the most loving, kind, and gentle dog I have ever owned.
David and Bella have been together for two years now, and he’s ensured that this chapter of her life is more joyful than the first.
“She is a senior but still has a ton of life,” David said. “Over the last two years, we have gone on lots of adventures together.”
Still, David never forgot about how Bella’s sad past must weigh on her.
Bella gave birth to an unfathomable number of puppies during her time with the breeder. And despite having been a parent numerous times, it is apparent that she didn’t have many opportunities to be a mother. But the connection she has with her children endures.
David recruited the aid of Embark, a canine DNA testing company that determines a puppy’s breed with certainty and reveals any known relatives who have previously used the service, in order to learn more about Bella’s ancestry.
Bella received a hit, as it turned out. David then saw June, Bella’s long-lost daughter for the first time.
When David contacted June’s owner, he discovered that she had probably experienced trauma herself. She had been taken to a shelter after being found as a stray dog, where her present owner had adopted her. Although nothing is known about June’s life, it is known that she is Bella’s child.
With that, David and June’s owner made the decision to plan a mother-daughter reunion.
Bella doesn’t have too many years left, therefore David reasoned that seeing her puppy would be enjoyable for her. And possibly as a means of getting over her previous trauma.
After years of separation, Bella finally met her daughter in the following instance:
David wasn’t sure how Bella would react — but she behaved differently around her daughter than any other dog.
“She will always just stay by my side when she is brought to a dog park or beach,” David said. “So it was shocking to me that she immediately engaged with June and showed a ton of interest, especially after she smelled her.”
June, who’s also described as shy, quickly warmed to Bella. Mother and daughter were like two peas in a pod.
It’s impossible to say for certain whether Bella and June could sense their relations. But David suspects they knew.
“Bella usually ignores other dogs, so her immediately engaging with June makes me think there was a special bond,” he said.
Mother and daughter parted ways after their playdate. But they wouldn’t live as strangers like they had in the past.
The owner of David and June has made gatherings with Bella and June a regular occurrence.
I had a lot of pleasure watching them interact. They got along well and were quite kind to one another, according to David. “We want to get together.”
